Gemstones from Quebec
Interest in Quebec gemstones is very recent. First extracted sporadically by prospectors or mineral collectors who used artisanal mining methods, they have only recently appeared on the jewellery market.
Despite the fact that geological contexts favourable to the formation of gemstones are rare in Quebec, Mr. André Gagnon, a lapidary from Quebec City, undertook research in 1994 in the mining archives, mineral collections and geological reports available.
Following the discovery of several interesting sites, he organized numerous expeditions to extract the minerals that seemed most promising for lapidary cutting and to subsequently offer them to jewellery artisans.
Did you know that?
This famous stone comes from the island of Tabor in Labrador. Gemologists have even given it a name, Labradorescence, which describes the effect of the shimmering colors when the stone is rotated. The remoteness of the deposit as well as the difficulties of extraction are the main causes of its rarity on the market
