It was in 1725 that General George Wade, commander of the British forces in the north of Great Britain, authorized the formation of six companies of independent troops to monitor the Highlanders. The companies were known locally as the "Black Watch" and were eventually amalgamated to form the 43rd (later 42nd) Royal Highland Regiment. The independent companies wore a dark blue, black and green plaid woven by more than sixty weavers from Strathspey, the home of the Grant clan.
