Quebec gemstones
Interest in gemstones from Quebec is very recent. First extracted sporadically by prospectors or mineral collectors who used artisanal mining methods, they only recently appeared on the jewelry market.
Despite the fact that the geological contexts favorable to the formation of gemstones are rare in Quebec, Mr. André Gagnon, lapidary of Quebec, undertook in 1994 research in the mining archives, collections of minerals and available geological reports.
Following the discovery of several sites of interest, he organized numerous expeditions aimed at extracting the minerals which seemed the most promising for stone cutting and subsequently offering them to jewelry craftsmen.
Did you know that?
Gaspéite is a very rare Nickel Carbonate that was found and described for the first time in 1956 in the region of the Chic-Chocs mountains in Gaspésie. The Geological Survey of Canada then gave it the name of its locality: gaspéite. Fallen into oblivion, the site of the discovery was found in 1998 by Mr. Gagnon.
The Grossular Garnet of the Hessonite variety comes from the Jeffrey asbestos mine located in Asbestos in the Bois-Francs. The Jeffrey Mine is world famous for its orange garnets and many other minerals of great interest to the collector.
