Gemstones from Quebec

Interest in Quebec gemstones is quite recent. First extracted sporadically by prospectors or mineral collectors who used artisanal mining methods, they have only recently appeared on the jewellery market.

Despite the fact that geological contexts favourable to the formation of gemstones are rare in Quebec, Mr. André Gagnon, a lapidary from Quebec City, undertook research in 1994 in the mining archives, mineral collections and geological reports available.

Following the discovery of several interesting sites, he organized numerous expeditions to extract the minerals that seemed most promising for lapidary cutting and to subsequently offer them to jewellery artisans.

Gaspéite is a very rare Nickel Carbonate that was found and described for the first time in 1956 in the region of the Chic-Chocs mountains in Gaspesie.The Geological Survey of Canada then gave it the name of its locality: gaspéite. Fallen into oblivion, the site of the discovery was found in 1998 by Mr. Gagnon.
