Interest in Quebec gemstones is quite recent. First extracted sporadically by prospectors or mineral collectors who used artisanal mining methods, they have only recently appeared on the jewellery market.
Despite the fact that geological contexts favourable to the formation of gemstones are rare in Quebec, Mr. André Gagnon, a lapidary from Quebec City, undertook research in 1994 in the mining archives, mineral collections and geological reports available.
Following the discovery of several interesting sites, he organized numerous expeditions to extract the minerals that seemed most promising for lapidary cutting and to subsequently offer them to jewellery artisans.
